What Wellfleet Chickens Do Better

Wednesday is Farmers' Market Day in Wellfleet. Today is actually the last farmers market of the year. I took a photo of the back window on a pick-up last Wednesday, parked outside Preservation Hall, impressed by the sentiments expressed. Buy Fresh, Buy Local, of course. Got Oysters? And, a new one for me, Pesticides Suck. Great choice of stickers!

While at the Farmers' Market, buy some fresh flowers, and greens for a healthier dinner tonight. There are also organic eggs for sale from happy Wellfleet chickens. Once you start eating fresh local eggs, you will never go back to the supermarket kind. Sometimes, in a rush, I used to grab a dozen eggs at Stop & Shop. But, after attending the farmers' market all summer, I have come to appreciate the difference and will no longer settle for less. Can you tell which two eggs come from chickens raised on the Outer Cape?

Are they the two eggs which are perfectly formed? My daughter, Katrina plans to start up her own hen coop- but apparently has to get written permission from her neighbors before she is 'legally' allowed to- interesting. She has promised me when she gets going she will supply me with constant eggs- in the meantime she gets her things from Tacoma Boys- which has all local farm foods plus more.

Fresh eggs are the best. I'll be so glad when we have our own chickens again. I miss having feather-brains around!

Oh, I love those stickers! I would say it is the eggs that look the prettiest. :) I saw a note on a neighbors mailbox yesterday that they have fresh eggs for $2.50 per dozen. While I do buy mine free range and organic at the local organic grocery, I would rather buy them fresh from a neighbor. I'm going to check it out!

Living Large, $2.50 is an amazing price. You should buy some and taste the difference. This summer our local eggs went up to $6 a dozen. Two years ago, I was finding them at $3. No longer!
We get fresh eggs as well. But is there really any taste difference? Here is one person who did their own taste test: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/arti...

Hi, Bob. Thanks for the link. I think there is a taste difference. You can certainly see the color difference for the yolks in the photo I posted.

ARe you comparing organic eggs from the supermarket vs. from the farmer's market? OUr supermarket eggs are organic and locally grown too, so the only difference is I get to support the farmer directly at the farmer's market

Comparing factory farm "organic" eggs bought at the supermarket, and the organic eggs from free-range chickens who roam yards in Wellfleet. Check out how much more yellow the yolks are!
I was going to pick the more vivid color yolks as being from organic eggs...

The yolks seem bigger too--is that right? I've noticed the organic eggs I purchase sometime have thinner shells so they're more prone to breaking. Have you ever encountered that?
I would venture to guess the perfectly-formed yolks are not the organic eggs. Is that right?

I guess this is a trick question, although I did not intend it to be. The top eggs, which are more vivid yellow, are from Wellfleet chickens. The bottom two eggs are organic eggs bought at a supermarket.
This is very interesting, Alexandra! I wonder what other foods exhibit lend themselves to such a comparison (not just in color but other properties). Fascinating.

Yeah fresh local eggs do completely taste better, especially if they are hard or soft boiled.

I would have guessed the top two eggs were the local ones, even if you hadn't told us in a comment. I agree that local eggs taste better.

Having come from farm country, I can assert that yolks are different color depending on the feed the chickens have. From United Egg Producers Certified website:
The color of the yolk varies depending upon the amount of corn in the hen's diet. Thus, a darker yolk usually means a diet that contains more corn or alfalfa in the feed. Yolk color does not affect nutritive value or cooking characteristics. Egg yolks are a rich source of vitamin A regardless of color.
