Why Innkeepers Need Quiet

It is a beautiful day here in Wellfleet, with bright sunshine sparkling all around. Not a bit of wind, the type of weather that has been absent for much of the summer. How does one show such peace and calm, I thought to myself? Why, the surface of Cape Cod Bay! That is what you are admiring above, a photo taken in Provincetown last year.

Yesterday I took Sven to Rhode Island to get his Green Card renewed. Upon our return, I reveled in the quiet of the house as I prepared dinner: gazpacho, using cucumber and heirloom tomatoes from the garden.

I have discovered that, as older innkeepers, we need more periods of total silence. No sounds of people walking overhead, no doors banging, no murmur of voices. It's pleasant to have our home all to ourselves, even if it's only for two days ...

I am glad to hear the weather is great there since my mom and friend are having their few days together on the beach in Dennis. We all need peaceful days. Weather stunning up here also and the trees turning.

We've observed the same. It's profoundly, blissfully quiet.
I think everyone needs quiet, although not everyone realizes that. good that you do, and that you savor it.

Bliss. I don't realize how sound sensitive I am, especially after living in a rural area for 10 years now, until I go somewhere else and notice all the doggone noise.

My house, my office = crazy quiet right now, and I LOVE IT.

Enjoy your down time.

I totally relate to you on this post- although not an innkeeper, my house is constantly full- at times I have up to 15 or more people squeezed in- so when there are times of quiet...I do feel like a child who has just received the BEST gift in the world!!!! (in fact, I find I sometimes just don't know what to do with myself :))

p.s.- at first I read your post title as being "Why innkeepers need to be quiet"- ha ha- I thought your article was going to be about saying something you shouldn't have said- then when I read the article I went back to read the title again and realized my mistake - I'm still laughing at my old eyes and old brain!
