After Dancing With Irene ...

Several weeks ago Sven and I walked up LeCount Hollow Beach, as we are wont to do. We like to go as far as the Marconi site, then turn around and walk back. When we had nearly reached our destination, we came upon a whimsical collection of driftwood, arranged like a ship at the foot of the dune. There were even benches to sit on and rest a while. I particularly enjoyed the dummy who stood guard. He was wearing a life vest, with a crushed aluminum can in one pocket. The beachcomber had given him seaweed for hair and a snorkeling mask as a face. Someone spent a lot of time scavenging flotsam and laboring over this creation. The least I could do was take a few photos and share them on this blog.

When we returned this week, Irene had visited the beach and danced off with the guard, whose vest was nowhere in sight. Check out the power of the waves. All that remains is the tallest timber of the ship's mast ...

Oh, that was cool. How sad he was swept out to sea.

Cool find. Someone had lots of energy and creativity... I'm glad you guys didn't get hit full force on the east coast beaches, the erosion could have been a lot worse.
Loved the title of the post- and then when I read it,...loved the entire post :). This certainly is a very poignant illustration of what Irene did....sweeping away small and big things...leave only skeletons behind.

Irene was quite a force around here, too. I still marvel at how destructive it was in some areas, while it left other areas unscathed.

Wow nature is really a force. It's easy to forget that, but these storms are reminders.

What a cool photo display of Irene's power.
The visual says so much. The words, in this case, fill in the blanks. Powerful post.

Nature is such a powerful force, as your photos show. I wonder if a beachcomber will another dummy to guard the beach?

WOW! what power! Nature gives and takes away! Guess you were lucky to have seen the lovely display of whimsy. And, that you took photos. Good thinking.
