Empty Beaches = Paradise for Dogs

Sven is allergic to animals, so we have none but always enjoy watching the dogs frolic at the beaches here. They express such joy at being able to run and play. I love the way they scratch the sand and prance about. Last week Gordon was having a particularly good time catching the Frisbee his owner would throw. The spectacle made us linger nearby before our walk, in total admiration of Gordon's abilities. Dog-lovers, why do your pets enjoy the beach so much?

I'm not sure why dogs enjoy the beach so much, but I've found that to be true with out two. I know the beagle likes to roll around in the remains of dead sea creatures, which makes her smell not that appealing to humans, but she loves it. Maybe it's the freedom to run and explore and sniff. Maybe we humans should try to do more of that.

Since we're landlocked here, my 2 dogs have not seen a real beach. I would love to know what they would think and how they would feel about the waves, in particular. We continue to have snow here most mornings in the Rockies. "Beach weather" is still a long way off for us.

The kids and I would love a dog, but hubby's compromised immune system and health issues prevents us from getting one. But like you, we love seeing dogs prance about on the beaches here. We actually have a little neighborhood dog named Lucy that's so adorable, we're always keeping an eye out for her when we drive to town and back. As for beaches, I wonder if the sand feels good on their paws...
