Got Strawberries?

I try not to serve guests regular store-bought strawberries because they are laden with pesticides. Hatch's, on the town hall parking lot, and Phoenix Fruit in Orleans carry strawberries produced by growers who raise crops that are pesticide-free.

You may have already signed a petition against a new pesticide, methyl iodide, which some strawberry farmers in California hope to use. Scientists are against: “This is without question one of the most toxic chemicals on earth," said John Froines, professor of environmental health sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles. Please read the full New York Times article that explains the implications for the rest of the country. The chemical is known to be a neurotoxin, as well as developmentally toxic, and an endocrine disruptor. Oh, and it causes breast cancer. The deadline to tell California State regulators to reject methyl iodide and urge the EPA to ban it is June 29. Sign the petition here.

Speaking of berries, the Historical Society is holding its annual Strawberry Festival this afternoon, from 2 to 4, at the Methodist Church. Strawberries that are organic? Non-organic? Hmmm ....

If you miss the Strawberry Festival, get yourself some strawberries without pesticides and try MarthaandMe's recipe for yummy strawberry shortcake ...

I've planted my own strawberries this year. We'll see how successful I am at eating more of them than the birds.

strawberries, like tomatoes, just don't have the flavor they used to have years ago. it's worth growing our own.

Yes, you are right, edpilolla. That's why the farm-picked taste so much better.
A strawberry festival sounds wonderful! I don't know anyplace we can get pesticide free strawberries around here, but we have found a pesticide free blueberry farm!

Oh, wow! Wish we had a pesticide-free blueberry farm nearby! Of course, one can pick one's own on the Cape, but I am not willing to pick anymore the way I used to because of the risk of ticks. Quite freaked out by ticks at the moment.

I just bought a half flat of organic local strawberries at the farmer's market Saturday here in Ashland, Oregon. I will go sign that petition and read that NYT article right now. WHY WHY WHY would anyone want to put a known neurotoxin on our food? Oh, right, we also inject known neurotoxins into our children's bodies... This folly really has to stop. Thank you, as always, for this important post.

had to think about this one for a bit. I know the previous pesticide was banned because it was bad for the ozone layer, and now this. on top of which strawberries are promoted as such a healthful food, which they are --without the added pesticides. yikes.
