Bonus Post: LeCount Hollow, Today

ME: How can we allow corporations like BP to pollute our oceans? My environmentalist writer friend Kerri, over at Living Large in our Little House, is feeling overwhelmed, and so am I. Will humanity learn anything from the Gulf oil spill?

SVEN: The sea can be so beautiful, but it is also menacing. For many tourists, the Atlantic represents the beach and having a good time. For a lot of people, the sea was menacing. Thousands of ships went down off Cape Cod. It's easy to enjoy the sea when you are not out there in a boat, fishing, under tough circumstances...

What's your take on this photo of the ocean?

Sven hit it right on the head! I'm totally fascinated by the ocean, if I lived right by it, I don't think I would ever want to go anywhere else. I can sit for hours on end, watching the waves, listening to boom of the surf, the rolling pebbles as the waves suck back in, the sudden instances where ther's dead silence before a wave breaks again. But in the blackness of night, it's a different story......walking the beach at night presents a dark ocean, a menacing ocean, you don't know what's lurking in it's depths. It's fingers are crawling out to reach for you.....
Thanks for the mention. This photo reminds me of the two opposites: How powerful the sea can be, but also how fragile.

I think the ocean -- and the photo -- is both. I AM scared by the power of the water. And also awed by it. But I find it incredibly beautiful and soothing and think it is a place we need to protect and revere, not pollute and destroy.

From Jennifer--who just got back a few hours ago from three days on the Oregon Coast, enjoying the ocean from very close up indeed.

My first thought when I viewed that photo is all the unknown deep beneath the surface. Which is all the more reason this BP mess is so horrible...we know what we know of what is damaged so far...but what about all we don't know of yet?
I just listened to a great interview with a swordfish sea captain on NPR. Fascinating to think about the beauty and potential danger of the sea. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?stor...

A most beautiful photo. I am absolutely mesmerized by the ocean, but realize it's power and danger, too. The oil spill makes me grieve for all the unknown havoc it will wreak in future years.
I also love the ocean and LOVE going there. We are fortunate that we live 15 miles away from the Atlantic (and .25 miles from the LI Sound.) My kids stand at the water's edge and SCREAM every time a wave comes in and crashes. I smile at their laughter but inside I'm somewhat nervous because I know how quickly it will snatch those little legs and drag them out with the sand. So, I have an appreciation of the Ocean and I admire it, but I am always on guard and ready...

I love the ocean too. It mesmerizes and soothes me. I am hoping that the oil spill tragedy will help educate my children and raise their awareness about the fragility of our earth and our responsibility to care for it and never let such a thing happen again.
