A lot of you are eager to find out when the French bakery and restaurant will open in South Wellfleet. Tired of waiting? Me, too. Still no word, although I did hear the new oven passed inspection and should be churning out crusty baguettes any day now.

In the meantime, how about Cottage Bakery in Orleans, a tiny shop that has won a number of awards over recent years and gained notoriety for its "Dirt Bombs"? Valentine’s Day is a perfect time to stop in and ogle the merchandise. Heart-shaped sugar cookies, berry pies sprinkled with little candy hearts, the chocolate treats above … you can’t go wrong at this local bakery. Whatever “gourmandise” the gourmand chooses will make the old taste buds break out in a grin. Cottage serves up top-notch patisseries, cakes, pies, muffins, and bread, etc. etc.
Want to enjoy a spectacular dinner special for Valentine’s Day?

Instead of France, head for Italy. Try
Messina, a casual tavern in Eastham, where $48,000 was raised to benefit the Haitian relief effort last month. This restaurant, right on Route 6 and under new management, will offer a four-course Saint Valentine’s 2010 prix fixe menu this weekend for $30. As an entrĂ©e, choose between Stuffed Sole, Rack of Lamb, Stuffed Pork Loin, or Surf & Turf. For dessert? Make mine Chocolate Ecstasy …

Oh, I am reading this before breakfast and you made me hungry. Not for cake but a nice crusty baguette. Luckily we have a French Bakery here, so I might just pop in for a nice fresh 'stick'.
Happy Valentine's.
Cottage Street Bakery looks so wonderful. I want to go there! It reminds me of this tiny hole-in-the-wall that we discovered in Bayfield, Wisconsin (which is a beautiful town of only 600 inhabitants in the wintertime on Lake Superior). I have an olfactory memory of the lovely smells coming from that bakery/sweet shop. Visiting here is on my to do list if I ever (I mean when) make it to Cape Cod.
Oh, those chocolate hearts look so yummy!
