Why Meeting Guests Can Be Complicated

Less than two weeks until spring! Then comes summer. Hurray! Above, Sven picks cherry tomatoes for a young guest several summers ago. Some guests are happy to get gifts of garden vegetables at arrival. Other guests, not so much.

Sven: "Being an innkeeper is kind of weird. Some people want me to sit down with them for a glass of wine. Others just want to be left alone. You have to accommodate very fast. It's really tricky."

I think that's true in any sort of situation, really -- and is an excellent and times challenging and draining skill which innkeepers especially need to develop and rely on.

I know when I stay at b&bs, in terms of interaction I try to balance what's going on with me with what's going on with the hosts -- I am staying in their home after all.

Amazingly enough this is even true of us as Pastors of a church and the people who come to visit the church- there are some who want FULL on attention and to be taken for coffee and visited weekly- and others who are like "Why are you in my face all the time- please just let me come 1 minute before church and leave 1 min afterwards"-- we have to 'go with the flow' and learn what people's preferences are. I had one lady who actually STOPPED coming to church because I 'showed her too much love' (her words)- I found out and went to apologize and she came back and I tried to 'ignore her' and as a result she became my best buddy!! ha ha!! We live and learn!!
