Knocked Out By Roses ...

Imagine a typical Cape Cod cottage and what comes to mind? A half Cape, perhaps, with pink roses cascading from a trellis or over a picket fence. Roses start blooming in June and signal summer. So, what plant could be more appropriate for Chez Sven? The problem is I have never been able to grow roses successfully.

Sven has always wanted rose bushes.

When we decided what to put at the bottom of the lawn, we opted for a split-rail fence (less upkeep than picket) and Knock-Outs. These roses do not need as much care as other varieties. They bloom non-stop and make quite a show. What do you think? Have you had any luck with growing roses? If so, what’s the secret?

loved the pictures! 'knock outs' sound wonderful- I need to go and find some.

Most flowers have not been my strong point- I must admit I've seen the demise of quite a few under my care. ;( Amazingly I do well with orchids- not sure why this is, maybe because I was raised in Singapore where orchids are prevalent?? Or maybe it is because orchids do not need as much water...so they survive my neglect!!

I do have roses which bloom every summer- but they were planted by the owner of my house- and they seem to be hardy and can withstand my ways!! I was wondering when they would begin to bloom-- and now after reading your blog I realize it could be any day now...since it is June :)
these look lovely -- I think you and Sven will be enjoying them, as will your guests and others who may pass by. thanks for sharing them here.

Beautiful! We have lilacs and hydrangeas, which I've noticed require far less upkeep than roses. Just call me the flower killer - I can't seem to keep them alive!

Oh Alexandra, these are stunning! Just beautiful.
I'm definitely going looking for Knock-Outs, because I've never had much luck growing roses. I guess I should do more than just plant them and look at them. I did get some of those little rose fertilizer things you stick in the ground around the plant. Of course, they never made it out of the house last summer, but I'm reforming this year and have already cleaned out the flower bed. It's a miracle. Anyway, your roses look really lovely.

I have heard that feeding the roses is the important part of keeping them healthy. What is strange with Knock-Outs, is that you are not supposed to deadhead, ie. cut off the faded blooms.
