Anyone For Donuts on the Outer Cape?

I admit I would never, ever walk into a Dunkin' Donuts shop, especially the new Dunkin' Donuts in Wellfleet. There would have to be some sort of emergency, like my granddaughter was choking on a Dancing Deer brownie, and we happened to be in the parking lot already at Cove Corners. So, when my son asked for the nearest donut shop, I cringed. Why did they have to eat donuts on Saturday?? How about a nice croissant from PB Boulangerie Bistro?

"Dunkin' Donuts managed to get a spot at Cove Corners," I croaked.

That happened the first Saturday of their visit. The donuts did not pass muster. Yuck.

The following weekend, my son asked if there wasn't a better donuts shop on the Outer Cape.

"At the Fairway?" I said. "It's in Eastham. I've heard they make awesome donuts."

Turns out the name of the donut shop is "Hole in One." My granddaughter ate half a raspberry donut. The donuts were delicious. Even I had one!

I love the donuts at Flemings, next to Willy's in Eastham. Their donut is a "cake-ier" version than at Hole-In-One. Flemings also has an old-fashioned strude,l reminiscent of bakeries back in the 1940s and 50s. And the apple fritter may be a little sweet for some, but about every two weeks I crave one!

Thanks, David. I will have to try Flemings.
I find the Wellfleet Dunkin' to be an interesting topic. Usually, my New England bred friends and acquaintances are almost unnaturally obsessed with all things "Dunkin" (as if Dunkin were the Red Sox or something!). Visitors to my town often try to scope out the closest location (they're around, but I'm not sure where - I'm not a big doughnut fan, but when I want one I get Krispy Kreme anyway..).

Massachusetts folk seem especially fond of their home state success story. Wellfleet, though, bucks the trend. I think about half of the Wellfleetians I come across rejoiced when it opened. The other half seem not only uninterested in their wares, but also a bit annoyed by its mere presence (or the fact that other folks ... tourists ... are enjoying it? I'm not sure which). I can't tell if it is because of the greasy doughnuts and bitter coffee , or some aversion to eateries that achieve success on a large scale.

If PB Bistro should ever overflow to the point of expansion - to Orleans, to P-town, then Back Bay ... down to Dupont Circle ...and then Bal Harbor .. it could create one heck of a dilemma for some locals !! :)

I'm also seeing that "donut" has passed into popular usage as the accepted spelling for that fried confection up North ... a spelling which came into being as part of the Dunkin' brand's proprietary name & logo - funny, isn't it - what's in a word? A whole other topic I guess - like ordering 'jimmies' on your New England summer ice cream cone - sure to spark an impassioned debate !! Perhaps this is the politicization of junk food .... ;)

I'm not crazy about the trash Dunkin' Donuts generates. Also, really, you should try the donuts from Hole in One while you're on the Cape this summer and let us know how their donuts compare with Krispy Kreme. (I still give my vote to croissants from PB.)
I'm not much of a dough nut eater....i prefer cinnamon rolls and home made ones are the BEST! :) The only dough nuts I used to like were in Japan- "Mr. Donut"= their pastries were light and fluffy- my favorite was a chicken roll (pastry wrapped chicken)...it melted in my mouth.

I think smaller towns probably don't care for chains coming in- it takes away from the character of the town..

Anjuli, I think you just answered Stan's question on why so many people in town are not pleased to have Dunkin' Donuts move in.
Hey Donuts on Saturdays is sacred, let's not make fun of that. Growing up in France, I never ate a donut until I was in my 20's. So no, my daughter will not live such a disgrace. But I agree, Dunkin' Donuts aren't up to par. Even our Winchell's here in California beats Dunkin, heads down.
