Report on Oyster Recycling After Oysterfest

It is wise to collect and recycle oyster shells after Oysterfest, apparently. Know why? If all the shells from the 2010 festivities had been recycled back into the water, Wellfleet would have removed 10% of the nitrogen created by a segment of the winter population, numbering 300 residents. This act would also produce 300,000 to 1,500,000 "free" oysters and filter 22 million gallons of water. I got this information from a recent report submitted by Curt Felix and circulated by Paul Pilcher, Chair of the Economic Development Committee, which will become the game plan for next year. Sounds good to me ....

Wow, I'd never thought about it. You can also recycle oyster shells by feeding them to chickens for added calcium. Not whole, of course.

I am happy to report that the 2010 OysterFest, in partnership with NOAA, recycled 4.2 TONS of shells, which will be overwintered outside and used by the Town of Wellfleet's Shellfish Dept. as cultch in the spring to create new oyster spawning habitat! Very exciting!

In fact, 120,000 oysters and 30,000 clams were shucked over the weekend's festivities, and I think we recycled most of them. This is going to do a lot for creating a healthy wild oyster fishery in Wellfleet Harbor!

Thank you, Nancy, for this clarification. This is such great news! Sorry I could not post your comment earlier as I was away for a couple days.
